Several years ago, we made a visit to Germany’s Mosel River Valley on an itinerary that took us took us from Paris to Prague. One of country’s most beautiful and tranquil regions, the valley was first cultivated by the Romans. Today, the hilltops are dotted with the ruins of old castles that overlook wine-producing villages along the riverbanks. In autumn, the region’s vibrant foliage encourages locals and visitors alike to hike or cycle the narrow paths that follow the river’s course. Here, the wake of a passing river boat has a surreal effect on reflections in the water.
